The call has gone out for more volunteer ethics teachers to support primary school children develop their moral reasoning skills.

The time is right to apply ahead of ethics teacher training in Port Macquarie on April 4 and 5.

Primary Ethics' classes offer an alternative to scripture classes in participating public schools.

More volunteer ethics teachers are needed in the area including at Tacking Point Public School.

Tacking Point Public School ethics coordinator Shannon Larkin said the Port Macquarie training provided a great opportunity for new volunteer ethics teachers to come on board.

"You don't need any prior teaching experience because the training is provided," she said.

"We are looking for people who can dedicate time once a week to teach a class."

The ethics teachers facilitate discussion around respect and ethical decision-making with children supported to think widely and critically, explore reasoning and develop arguments respectfully.

Simone Campbell said she really enjoyed her role as an ethics teacher at Tacking Point Public School.

"I like that the classes provide the opportunity to instil important ethical values to our children," she said.

"The lessons give children an opportunity to stop and think about being a good person and making moral ethical decisions."

She said it also gave children the opportunity to share their thoughts on important ethical topics.

Mrs Campbell said she taught English to adults which involved providing lots of instructions, rules around grammar and vocabulary.

"Ethics teaching is different - it's more of a facilitation role," she said.

"The lessons and curriculum are well designed and scripted, so easy to follow and apply."

Ethics classes at Tacking Point Public School have expanded since starting there two years ago.

Seven ethics classes were provided at the school in 2019.

"It has grown because we have been able to engage more teachers but we always need more because it's a volunteering role," Ms Larkin said.

"In a regional sense, I get the impression more and more schools are coming on board."
