The 16-year-old from Hastings Secondary College Port Macquarie Campus is about to undertake a year long Rotary Youth Exchange in Brazil and said he can't wait to see what the South American country has to offer.
"I am really excited about heading off to be honest," Hector said.
"I guess I am nervous but mostly I am excited to get there and to start experiencing a different culture and way of life."
Hector said after watching his siblings also take part in a Rotary Youth Exchange he was more convinced than ever to sign up when it was his turn.
"I'm not following in their footsteps but they came back with such great stories about their time away that I wanted to go someplace and experience new things.
"I have been told that the people are really friendly. I am really looking forward to making new friends.
"I didn't know any Portuguese before I found out where I was going so improving my language skills will also be a priority.
"My first host mum doesn't speak a word of English which I am taking as a good thing as it will force me to learn the language quickly."
At home Hector plays rugby and is an avid surfer so is hoping to continue playing sport in his new home.
"I love playing sport. I hope I can keep doing that when I am over there.
"I think the exchange will open my eyes to how different people live and that will be a good thing. The other thing I am looking forward to is Carnevale."
Hector leaves on his adventure on January 17 and is expected back in the Hastings mid 2021.
