NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) district officer Stuart Robb said the fire is burning internally within the Crestwood fire zone and its level was advice as of 10am.
Fire crews on the ground are being supported by waterbombing aircraft.
The fire is causing a significant amount of smoke to billow into the air. However Mr Robb said the fire is not responsible for all the smoke seen in Port Macquarie, as it has resulted from a number of areas.
There was little wind overnight, which resulted in smoke settling over the town.
Mr Robb said there is a low to moderate fire danger on Thursday, January 9. Firefighters will face a north-easterly wind in the morning, before a predicted cool south-easterly change this afternoon.
Firefighters were initially called to the blaze in the afternoon on Wednesday, January 8.
Crews continued to monitor the blaze into the evening.
The blaze is not expected to put pressure on existing fire containment lines.
Mr Robb said there were no properties under threat.
