JOHN Sprague started his New Year in the best possible fashion when Razano lunged at the line to take out the first race of the Port Macquarie Race Club card on Wednesday.

The three-year-old chestnut filly held off the Joanne Hardy-trained The Actress to take out the Harelec Offgrid Maiden Handicap over 1512 metres.
It was her first victory in 12 starts.
"She just grinds away", Sprague said.
It was the first race in a six-race card at the annual event which was held in front of a relatively small crowd.
