The fire danger rating has been ranked as severe.
No fires may be lit in the open and all fire permits are suspended during a total fire ban. Gas and electric barbecues may be used provided certain conditions are met.
The ban covers the areas bound by Bellingen, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie-Hastings, Kempsey, and Nambucca.
Lighting a fire during a total fire ban attracts an on the spot fine of $2,200. If the matter goes to court, a fine of up to $5,500 and/or 12 months imprisonment can be imposed.
The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted a top temperature of 31 degrees for Port Macquarie with a slight chance of a thunderstorm and shower in the afternoon.
Winds will be from the north to north-west up to 25kmh turning westerly up to 40kmh in the late morning.
There will be some relief come Friday with the top temperature to reach just 23 degrees.
