Neilson finished in fourth position in the grommets division, while McEnally wasn't even in the draw when she turned up on Saturday morning.

Port Macquarie Bodyboarding Association president Clayton Pickworth said she then registered from the beach after seeing the small conditions on offer at Town Beach.

"When she turned up she said she thought she could surf it and then made it through to the final," Pickworth said.

"She came with a friend and ended up getting fourth in the cadets from a beach entry so the chicks were holding their own."

With only two to three feet of swell available, competitors found it difficult to showcase some of the bigger manoeuvres.

"The wind was blowing a gale all weekend," Pickworth said.

"It was surfable, but just made the conditions really hard and we just had to make the most of the swell."

The PMBA president said Chase O'Leary came up with the highest scoring wave of a weekend with a 9.83 in his semi-final on Sunday.

"It was a really good barrel ride on the right-hander at Lighthouse where he came out and did a backflip off the section," he said.

Port Macquarie's Brodey Brockmann's quest to secure the inaugural Triple Crown suffered a setback when he was bundled out in the quarter-finals.

It leaves him with some work to do in the third and final round at the Central Coast on November 23 and 24.

"He just didn't get the waves on the Saturday unfortunately," Pickworth said.

In further encouraging signs for the growth of the sport, competitor numbers increased from last year's event.

"From last year we doubled our entries from 24 to 52."
