The report is set to include updates on investigations into water filtration systems, any current plans to raise the dam walls and details about any investigations into building new water infrastructure.
Cr Mike Cusato raised the matter at September's Port Macquarie-Hastings Council meeting.
He has since resigned as a councillor.
The council asked general manager Craig Swift-McNair to write to NSW Water Minister Melinda Pavey asking for information on any new funding opportunities for local government to upgrade water infrastructure.
Letters will also go to NSW Nationals leader John Barilaro and Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams to advise of the council's correspondence to the minister.
Cr Cusato said the council needed to review its water infrastructure and systems periodically.
"I do believe it's time for us to really look at this," he said.
Cr Cusato, in comments in the council business paper, said the drought was at the forefront of everyone's minds but water planning should always be part of the council's core business regardless of the seasonal conditions.
"No major dam building projects have been completed for decades in NSW and the rest of the country is also deficient in water infrastructure," he said.
"This motion aims to bring to council just where we are up to with our long-term water strategies."
Mayor Peta Pinson congratulated Cr Cusato on the raising the water security matter.
"Water is the source of life," she said.
The total combined storage level of Port Macquarie and Cowarra dams was at just over 55 per cent on Wednesday, September 25.
Falling dam levels and a three-month outlook showing no signs of significant rainfall triggered level 2 water restrictions in early September.
The Bureau of Meteorology says rainfall is likely to be below average across most of the country for the remainder of 2019 and early 2020.
The report on water security is due to go before the December 11 council meeting.
