The Hastings Secondary College Westport campus student said the experience was about raising students' issues with the highest levels in the department during a week devoted to the celebration of public education in NSW.
"It was really great to be able to give a voice to students at the department level," Iesha said.
"Taking part in the Secretary for a Day was an exciting opportunity for high school students to come together and learn about the workings of the department.
"Over the two days we participated in a range of workshops and discussions to explore the Education Week theme."
Students were down in Sydney at the department's offices at Parramatta during the first week in August and Iesha said that the best part was mixing with so many different students and being able to talk to department secretary Mark Scott.
"We were able to participate in different forum discussions to share our insights and opinions with like-minded students and presenters," she said.
"We were also able to some wonderful social activities including going out for dinner.
"I really enjoyed all of it but my favourite part was when we actually got to talk to Mark Scott because it felt like he really listened to us.
"It was also great to take part in the business unit workshop where I was working with other students to talk about equality among students and the need for equal opportunities for all students."
From the experience Iesha hopes she can get more outdoor seating at Hastings Secondary College.
"Before I went down I had to find out what students at my school wanted to change or add at school and my survey said students wanted more outdoor seating.
"Now that I have been through the program I will meet with the 2020 student leadership team and explore what grants and fundraising ideas we can come up with to get more seats for students."
