Book Week runs from August 17-23.
The theme is Reading is My Secret Power..
The library has adjusted the theme to "Reading is my Superpower" because according to Mrs Wood, "reading is essential for children to be able to navigate school".
"It is so important to get that early start," said Mrs Wood.
She said the library even caters for children who don't enjoy reading.
"At the library we have a lot of novels with big graphics that are pictured orientated," she said.
Mrs Wood said it takes just 10 minutes a day for a child to pick up literacy skills.
She identified Anh Do's Ninja and Hotdog series as very popular for younger children as well as Andy Griffiths' Treehouse series.
Port Macquarie mum of four Michelle Kyan brings her youngest daughter Adele to storytime sessions at the library.
She said her children have grown up with books.
"We have always read to them. I have older kids in high school who borrow 2-3 big books in the week and get through them," she said proudly.
"It definitely improved their English, spelling and understanding of words as well."
"We started to read to them when they were 2-3 years old and take them to the library."
And it isn't just children's books that her offspring enjoy.
"We don't necessarily limit it to 'fun' books. My parents had a set of encyclopedias which Adele would read with them."
Book Week is run by the Australian Council of Books and celebrates Australian authors and books and promotes literacy and reading.
- Storytime is held at Port Macquarie-Hastings Library 10.30am-11.30am Tuesday and Wednesday for 3-5 year olds.
