Former University of Sydney PhD and independent scholar, Dr Tony Swain will discuss the revival of Confucianism in contemporary China.
Fellow philosophers can attend the forum at the CWA rooms at 11 Horton Street from 6pm to 7.30pm on Sunday, August 25.
"The underlying understanding was that people who had devoted themselves to studying moral philosophy would themselves be exemplary human beings," said Dr Swain.
"When the Western world first began trading with China it was the most populated and urbanised country on Earth.
"Between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries China suffered a series of humiliating defeats. Confucius took a lot of the blame.
"In my talk I will look at China's current Confucian revival and explain those aspects of Confucius' teachings that are believed to be vital for guiding the country through the 21st century."
Dr Swain has previously lectured Aboriginal Studies at the University of South Australia and was a senior lecturer in religious studies for two decades at the University of Sydney.
