Joshua Mitchell Irving, 21, of Oxley Crescent appeared before Magistrate Hudson in the Port Macquarie Local Court on July 19.
Irving applied for bail but it was formally refused.
He was charged following an operation by detectives from the child abuse and sex crimes squad's Child Exploitation Internet Unit (CEIU).
Detectives from the CEIU began engaging online with the man following a referral from the National Canadian Child Exploitation Coordination Centre (NCECC).
Police allege the man uploaded child abuse material to a social media site and believed he was speaking with a 51-year-old man in order to participate in sexually-explicit acts with a nine-year-old boy.
Following inquiries, detectives arrested a 21-year-old man at a home in Port Macquarie on July 19.
A search warrant was executed at the address and a number of electronic devices seized for forensic analysis.
The man was taken to Port Macquarie Police Station and charged with using a carriage service for child pornography and possess child abuse material on July 2, 2019.
Irving will next appear in the local court on September 19.
The accused is also facing three counts of having sexual intercourse with a child over 10 years and under 14 years.
These offences allegedly occurred on February 23, 2019.
Irving appeared in Port Macquarie Local Court on July 18 before Magistrate Price.
He will return to court on these charges on August 18.
