Former Brisbane resident Jon Power said he also joined as a way to meet new people after arriving in the city in February this year.
The Port Macquarie unit responds to storms, floods, vertical and road incidents as well as performing searches for missing people.
"It's just about giving back to the community," said Mr Power.
"I just moved to town and thought it was a good way to meet people.
"The week I moved to Port Macquarie there was a notice saying there was going to be an open day down here looking for volunteers. I thought, 'why not'?."
The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council engineer said he was enjoying the team work at the SES and would recommend it to other new residents.
"It's been more rewarding than anything," said Mr Power.
"I haven't got into cutting cars but I've helped out where I can.
"It's a really good group of people down here and there's a real team spirit.
"There's not an expectation that you have to do stuff, it's just what you are able to give. Don't be shy because there is always something to do."
Port Macquarie SES are on the lookout for additional volunteers to help the community in emergency situations.
The unit is holding an information night at 9 Central Road, Port Macquarie on Wednesday, July 31 from 6.45pm.
Potential volunteers must be aged 16 and over, and would receive training for storm and water damage emergencies before progressing to searches, vertical rescue, industrial rescue and road crash rescue.
There are also roles in the operations department including admin and radio communications.
Anyone who would like to intent an interest to become a volunteer can do so HERE.
