Port Macquarie Landcare hosts National Tree Day weed swap event, July 28

As part of the environmental group's pledge to help restore and regenerate the bush, they will be encouraging the community to dig out weeds and swap them for native plants.

Estelle Gough from Port Macquarie Landcare said the weed swap idea has been gaining momentum since it was first established in May 2019.

"I have had the idea of a weed swap in my mind for nearly a decade and it is wonderful that Landcare Port Macquarie is now in a position to be able to facilitate the swap," Mrs Gough said.

"We have a bustling nursery which allows us to plant local native plants all over Port Macquarie at our work sites.

"More recently we are focusing on educating the public about bringing the native bushland into their back yards."

National Tree Day started in 1996 and has grown into Australia's largest community tree-planting and nature care event.

It is a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and give back to the community.

Mrs Gough said in the past National Tree Day has been a great day to learn more about the local environment and hopes that continues in 2019.

"National Tree Day is a great opportunity to head out into the garden and enjoy our native plants and wildlife," she said.

"At our weed swap we ask people to bring a photo of the weeds you have removed from your garden and in return we will give you three natives to replace them.

"So far we have had a great take up of people who have wanted to be part of the swap and we hope that on National Tree Day that continues.

"We will also be chatting about the work Landcare is currently doing in the community and will be happy to answer any questions."

On July 28 Landcare Port Macquarie will be at the corner of Hill Street and Lord Street from 10am to 12pm.
