The University of Melbourne honorary fellow will be presenting a discussion about 'problems with particles' at Port City Bowling Club from 6pm to 7.30pm.
The talk will discuss philosophy of quantum physics, quantum field theory and mathematics in modelling the physical world.
Dr Hinton said the talk will cover the concept of a 'particle' in the development of physics and our understanding of the universe.
"The best form of physics we have is quantum physics, created in the 1900s," said Dr Hinton.
"We've got a bunch of equations here which tell us what the world is like.
"The most accurate theories humanity has ever created, the math works well.
"So we have these accepted mathematics theories and we can see all particles around us in fences, grass and we say, 'does it all fit together?'.
"The answer is no, when you investigate what the mathematics mean suddenly the idea of a particle falls apart.
"How can such a brilliantly good form of mathematics not give us a picture of the world in our daily lives.
"This talk is all about the ongoing debate about what is a particle."
Dr Hinton has received an Honours Bachelor of Engineering in 1978, of Science in 1980 and Master of Science Degree in Mathematical Sciences in 1982 from University of Adelaide.
He was awarded a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Newcastle in 1984
During the same year he joined Telstra Research Laboratories in Victoria to study the behaviour of lasers used in communications systems.
In 2006 he joined the Centre for Ultra Broadband Information Networks, joined the Centre for Energy Efficient Telecommunications (CEET) in 2011 and took the role as Director of the CEET in 2013.
