While mathematically they would still be a shot of qualifying for the post season, results would need to fall their way in the closing stages of the competition.
"If we lose this weekend we will be relying on other results and we don't want to be doing that," Kirkland said.
The front-rower will return to the Sharks starting lineup in a timely boost to a side suffering from suspensions and injuries.
He got through 25 minutes last weekend and another stint like that will be the goal as the Sharks aim to end a five-game winless streak.
"I've been wanting to contribute and feel the best way I can do that is by being out there," he said.
"I'm into the starting side and can't wait. I'll probably get about 30 or 40 minutes because I'm still a couple of runs off (full fitness)."
Kirkland said Mitch Wilbow (suspension) and injured duo Kieran Gallagher and Joel Antilla would all return next week.
But it would all be for nothing if they didn't come away with a victory against the Bulls.
"We're not taking them lightly, that's for sure," he said.
