David rose to prominence in 1983 with the band Not Drowning, Waving and has since produced albums for Archie Roach, Christine Anu, Monique Brumby and Papua New Guinea artist George Telek, and scored over 100 films and television series including Bran Nue Dae, The Man Who Sued God, Proof and In A Savage Land to name a few.
As a songwriter, David Bridie tells some distinctly Australian stories set in familiar streets or wide open spaces. Others look beyond our shores, to the heat of West Papua and New Guinea, the Pacific islands, and other places like Manus and Nauru.
The Wisdom Line is the culmination of 35 years of work. It's an album about what it means to be home - whether home is the city, suburb or town you grew up in, or you've been displaced, or you were here first. It sounds spare and atmospheric and ambient, plus there are big songs with exquisite grains of truth.
The Wisdom Line is also a record that connects, in a world where we're more connected than ever, and yet we too rarely look up from our phones. It observes, and it reminds us that the world is watching us, too.
David's return to Wauchope Arts Hall is eagerly anticipated by an enthusiastic local crowd, thrilled to have the chance to see The Wisdom Line performed with a live band as well as projections of the accompanying short films.
In March 2019 David Bridie was honoured by the Australia Council with the presentation of the Don Banks Music Award "for a distinguished artist who has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to music in Australia". Past recipients include Liza Lima (2018), Lyn Williams OAM (2017), Brett Dean (2016), Archie Roach AM (2015), Mike Nock (2014) and Kev Carmody (2013).
The award was also a nod to Bride's extensive career in all areas of music; he has scored over 100 films and television series including 'Bran Nue Dae', 'The Man Who Sued God', 'Tempted', 'Proof' and 'In A Savage Land' just to name a few.
Bridie also developed, alongside respected PNG musician Airileke Ingram, the Wantok Musik Foundation, a not-for-profit music label aiming to generate and foster various cultural exchanges between indigenous Australia and Melanesia by recording, releasing and promoting music in that region.
Bridie will perform at the Wauchope Arts Hall on Saturday June 15 from 7.30pm.
