Police believe the man may have fallen from a rock ledge.
The last sighting of the 37-year-old was on Wednesday afternoon.
Police have established a crime scene around the man's vehicle and have blocked off traffic to the Crescent Head Lookout while the search is conducted.
PolAir will assist local police and are expected to arrive on scene at around 10.30am.
Police will also be assisted by water police and surf rescue to conduct a search of the coastline and surrounding beaches.
The SES may also be called in to help search the rock ledge where it is believed the man may have fallen.
Inspector Stuart Campbell said the search will continue throughout the day.
"We'll be focusing on the coastline and ocean and hopefully we can find him," he said.
The man is believed to be a local resident.
The initial search involved police, Marine Rescue, the SES and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
