If the first 3.8 kilometres of Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie is any indication, 2019 could be headed for a thrilling finish.
While there is still a long way to go, very little separated both the top pro male and top pro female athletes as they exited the water to start the bike leg.
An incredible group of seven men exited the swim at about the same time as each other including 2016 winner Tim Reed.
Mark Bowstead, Clayton Fettel, Matt Franklin, Denis Chevrot and Luke Watson were all out in 44.45.
Cameron Wurf was a further four and a half minutes back, but could make his move out on the bike course.
American Kelsey Withrow (49.29) and Swiss superstar, now Port Macquarie local, Caroline Steffen (49.33) were almost side-by-side in the pro females when they exited the water to start their 180-kilometre bike leg.
