The then-Hastings Council lifeguard tragically drowned in a freak accident whilst surf skiing at Lighthouse Beach on August 12, 1990.
A wooden deck overlooking the ocean with a flag pole and a stainless steel plaque was later erected in 2015, and had since become damaged.
The plaque commemorates his record of 18 major rescues in one season and preparations to compete in the Nutri-Grain Ironman Grand Prix.
His brother and fellow surfer, Darren Northey said he was thankful for the community's help in revamping the memorial with a new brass plaque.
"The original memorial was stainless steel and had become damaged. A member of the public brought to our attention that it was in need of repair," he said.
"The council, to their credit, found some funds from recreation fund and put the money forward to do this.
"From the outset the memorial was tiled stone. It was then redone, and for the community to get on board, that was huge."
Mr Northey said he owed thanks to organisers Tony Hallinan, Mick Lang, Liam Bulley and Kevin Forward as well as a member of the public, Annette Townsend, who originally requested the renewal.
Mr Northey said he still swims and surfs at the beach, after initially abandoning it for three years.
"There was three years around 1993 where I didn't surf there because it was a bad spot for me," he said.
"Although now it is my favourite beach and I can feel a bit of a connection with Jason.
"It feels like I'm with him out there."
