SOCIAL workers in the Hastings have marked World Social Work Day by sending a message of support and solidarity to their colleagues in Christchurch.

Local Social Work Practice Group convenor Lava Kohaupt said social workers in Christchurch would be at the forefront of efforts to provide support to individuals, families and communities left devastated by the horrific shooting.
"It is difficult to imagine the impact that an event like this has on the entire community and we are thinking of our colleagues in the social work profession who are trying to help others deal with the shock and trauma of this event," Ms Kohaupt said.
"We have sent a message to the social work departments at Christchurch and Burwood hospitals and the Canterbury Health District to let our colleagues know that we are thinking of them as they respond to the overwhelming grief and sadness being felt throughout their community."
World Social Work Day is celebrated each year in March. The occasion provides an opportunity to recognise the contribution of social workers as champions for social justice, self-determination and human rights.
The theme for World Social Work Day 2019 is Promoting the importance of human relationships. This is a poignant theme and one that underpins all work being done by social workers.
Ms Kohaupt said social workers provided key supports to address the inequities of the world's most vulnerable individuals, families and communities.
"We work in a wide range of areas, including mental health, family violence, child abuse, aged care, disability, housing, drug and alcohol, and in doing so, advocate for a fairer society," she said.
