But in six weeks time, they’ll be joined by another six teams from the Port Macquarie association in the NSW Junior State Cup finals.
Port Macquarie Junior Touch Football Association committee member Melinda Cotter admitted she was like a “proud grandparent” when she witnessed the under-10 girls’ success on Sunday.
Now they get to do it all again in Wollongong on April 27 and 28.
“We’re just absolutely stoked to have seven of our 10 teams off to Wollongong,” she said.
“It shows how strong our teams are for a country town.”
Cotter admitted the performance of the weekend was undoubtedly the under-10 girls, but it was the under-18 girls who exceeded expectations.
“They all played out of their skins and were beaten by Manly in the semi-final,” she said.
“If they avoided Manly they would have made the final.”
The top 80 teams from both the northern and southern conferences will battle it out to be crowned the best in New South Wales.
“To have seven of our teams make it … that’s about a 10th of total teams coming from Port Macquarie; it’s a great effort,” Cotter said.
Port Macquarie will be represented in the under-10, under-16 and under-18 girls divisions, while the under-10, under-14, under-16 and under-18 boys will join them for the trip south.
“The under-10 girls won our first title on Sunday since 2002; the last team to do it was the under-14 girls in Wollongong,” Cotter said.
“Some of the girls from that team turn 30 this year, so when I told them that, it really sunk in how much of an achievement it was.”
