The reconfiguration work would happen after the hardware chain moved out, subject to development application approval.
The development application has been on exhibition and is in progress with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.
A report will go the council’s Development Assessment Panel after an assessment is complete.
The development application seeks to change the use to specialised retail premises with alterations and additions.
It is proposed to internally divide the Lake Road building into five tenancies.
An anchor tenant is in place and a leasing campaign is underway to fill the other tenancies with large format retailers.
The building will become vacant when Bunnings relocates to purpose-built premises at 18 John Oxley Drive.
The new $43 million Port Macquarie Bunnings Warehouse is expected to open its doors in early March.
More than 205 residents are official team members of the new store.
