JOSH Hyde’s towering six off the last ball wasn’t enough for Port City Breakers to claim the second annual Charity Shield in Port Macquarie on Monday.

The Breakers clashed with AFL club Port Macquarie Magpies in the final of the 10-over competition as footy codes from around the region united for a local family doing it tough.
In the end it was the Magpies’ cricketing fraternity including Fraser Carroll, Sam Johnson and Jesse Schmidt that ultimately proved too good as they defended 48.
All oval-ball clubs from the Hastings were involved with the Breakers, Sharks, Vikings, Pirates, Magpies and an invitational All-Stars team playing the tournament to raise funds for Erica Walker.
Walker is a registered nurse and mother who was diagnosed with a brain tumor late last year.
Organiser and Breakers captain Adrian Daley said it was a great day played in the right spirit.
“We had a couple of stumpings, a few run-outs, a few sixes and a few classic catches; it was a great day,” he said.
“It’s like that on days like this; it was all played in great spirit.”
The Breakers required 26 runs off the final two overs to steal victory and when the first ball went for six, an unlikely win loomed large.
“We got done by one run in the final; we needed seven off the last ball, but it wasn’t to be,” Daley said.
Plans are already in place for the third instalment of the charity day next year with an additional two clubs potentially included.
“We’ll try and get a couple more teams and make it an eight-team knock-out next year and build on it again,” Daley said.
“Everyone’s had fun and hopefully we can build it up and make it even better next year.”
