The program is run by the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and the boxes contains uniforms, magazines, medals, badges and other artifacts from the War Memorial’s collection.
Clive Smith, president of the Port Macquarie Museum, said the War Memorial asked the museum to get involved in the program.
“This will be the second year we have had these history boxes at the museum and we would be really happy if schools, groups and organisations got in touch to borrow the boxes,” Mr Smith said.
“The idea is to give children from primary school right through to high school the opportunity to have a hands on experience with artifacts that are on display at the War Memorial.
“The War Memorial get so many pieces donated to their collection and this is a way for them to share that with people all over the country.”
In 2018 a number of schools across the Hastings, Macleay and Manning region borrowed the boxes and Mr Smith hopes that continues this year.
“The two history boxes we currently have are focused on World War 1 but we are potentially get boxes focused on other wars and war efforts later in the year” he said.
“Generally we loan then out for a few weeks at a time.
“It is great for the kids because they get white gloves to make them feel important handling the documents in the box but they also get the chance to try on a uniform or touch a replica medal.”
To borrow the boxes contact the Port Macquarie Museum on 6583 1108.
