Port Macquarie Museum volunteers say International Selfie Day attracted over 100 visitors to the popular museum.
The event was on Wednesday, January 16.
Some 120 visitors enjoyed touring the museum, which offered free entry on the day.
Port Macquarie Museum's volunteer curator Debbie Sommers said visitors of all ages explored the museum’s exhibitions and collections and documented their visit with photographs using a branded frame and selfies.
“Many of the visitors were attracted by the free entry,” Ms Sommers said.
“They may not have visited us otherwise but we think it was a fun way to get them through the doors, and most were very surprised by the size and scope of our award winning museum.
"We are hoping they will be return visitors in the future."
Visitors were from places as far away as Perth, Argentina and the UK, with most of them spending several days or longer in the city.
Others were regular visitors to Port Macquarie during the summer holidays.
“One 53 year old gentleman from Newcastle visited with his extended family and told us he had been holidaying at Port Macquarie every year since he was two years old,” Ms Sommers said.
“A small number of visitors were locals.
"It was fun to see young children who had visited on school excursions guiding their siblings and parents around the museum and showing them the exhibits they liked best.
“With our regularly changing exhibitions most people will see something new each time they visit."
The vast majority of our Selfie Day visitors had not visited the museum previously.
“For us the day was targeted at visitors to Port Macquarie for the holidays and particularly families looking for an alternative to spending the whole day at the beach.
“We were very pleased with the visitor numbers for the day and will be ensuring it becomes one of our regular public programs,” Ms Sommers said.
The Port Macquarie Museum also offers free entry on the first Sunday of each month.
