Port Macquarie Sub-branch of the RSL on Friday night voted unanimously against a council proposal for the eventual removal of the War Memorial in Horton Street to a site at the edge of the car park on the Kooloonbung Creek Reclamation Scheme area in Short Street.
Now a good deal of the planned development has taken place members generally considered the suggested site most unsuitable. The resolution moved by Stan Ryder was a previous motion agreeing to the site be withdrawn and the Sub-branch advise the council it does not favour its suggested site, but considered an ideal location for the War Memorial would be on the river front green at the eastern end of Horton Street when the planned reclamation takes place.
The matter came up for discussion in connection with a sub-committee report on suggest changes in the local observance of Anzac Day. One suggestion is, after a brief pause for wreath laying at the memorial, the march continue to the green where those attending the commemoration service could be much more comfortably accommodated than at the memorial. Stressing the advantage of this, Gordon Bowle said it was impossible to place many more seats in the street and the present number was quite inadequate.
Another suggested change in the proceedings is the guest speaker at the main service be restricted to six minutes and at the Dawn Service to four minutes. President Steep said he considered the suggested the times an insult to the speakers.
Cricket – Methodists v Leagues Club
Methodists compiled 203 in the first innings of the match being played on Oxley Oval. They were pinned down by the accurate medium-paced bowling for a greater part of the afternoon but finally finished up with a total which will present a challenge to the Leagues batsmen next week. Terry Suters compiled a brisk 46 and Bruce Westbrok, in a patient innings of nearly three hours made 92 not out, running out of partners at 5.50pm. His innings held the side together and was mainly composed of cuts, cover drives and leg glances including nine boundaries.
