From an angling perspective, the past week or so has been a little like groundhog day, with constant nor’ east winds blowing all day and night for days. While you have still been able to fish most parts of the estuary, those hoping to head offshore, or enjoy a spot of beach or rock angling have been mostly disappointed.

Unfortunately we may have a few more days of this weather pattern, however, the notoriously accurate weather forecasters are suggesting we may see the wind finally drop out early next week. Fingers crossed.
Given these conditions, virtually all action has focused on our local estuary systems with plenty of anglers hitting the water despite red weed throughout the lower reaches. Star attractions have again been the summer staples – flathead and whiting – with some great results achieved on both species. Flathead numbers have been excellent from most parts. Best reports have come from around Pelican Island however the breakwalls have produced their fair share.
Pilchards and whitebait have been working well, while quality hard-bodied diving lures are the choice for lure enthusiasts. Lake Cathie, Limeburners and Blackmans Point have been the pick of locations for whiting, however those with boats who venture further up the Maria have reported a better class of fish. Closer to Port, the back channel has also been worth a look for these tasty targets.
A few reasonable mulloway have been on offer off the breakwalls, with live baits or whole squid. There have also been some nice bream with mullet strips and cut up pilchards working well. The bottom of the tide has been prime time.
The Hastings has been most consistent for both blue swimmers and mud crabs. Best reports on blue swimmers have come from the back channel and around the Hibbard, while around Rawdon Island and well up the Maria have been worth a look for muddies.
The angling fraternity’s main focus is on the Golden Lure. Reports say with the offshore conditions it will be a level playing field for all entrants. We just hope it’s reasonable enough for all boats to get out.
Wishing a happy new year to all, good fishing and tight lines for 2019.
