At this stage, the system is likely to impact more severely on the areas south of Forster through to Sydney and the Illawarra.
The local government area can expect partly cloudy skies until the rain event.
Meteorologist with weatherzone Jacob Cronje said the system is not an east coast low but a low pressure system.
"This system is continuing to develop and should move into the western parts of the state on Tuesday," he said.
"At this stage, Port Macquarie-Hastings will be less affected than areas south.
"However, the positioning of this low could change," he said.
"It really depends on where the centre of this eventually ends up."
With the showers likely to begin on Tuesday night, there will be potentially heavy falls throughout Wednesday.
Rainfall is likely to continue into Thursday morning.
We are likely to see significantly strong north easterly winds, mainly on Wednesday.

"We are likely to see significantly strong north easterly winds, mainly on Wednesday," the meteorologist said.
"The modelling suggests rainfall in the vicinity of 10mm to 20mm for the Port Macquarie-Hastings will fall from Tuesday night through to Thursday morning.
"Heavier falls are likely further south.
"As the low pressure system moves into the Tasman, those winds will turn south westerly and become particularly strong, mainly about the coast.
"Those winds are likely to persist even as the showers clear on Thursday," he said.
Monday and Tuesday's maximum temperatures will reach 26 degrees with a minimum of 14 degrees on Tuesday.
Wednesday's minimum will be 18 degrees and even with the predicted rainfall, the maximum temperature will still climb to 29 degrees with very warm air mass coming from the interior.
Thursday's minimum is expected to be 16 degrees with a maximum of around 26 degrees.
Mr Cronje said the weekend would feature sunny conditions with a 27 degree maximum on Saturday and an even warmer 31 or 32 degrees on Sunday.
An existing low is currently sitting over the Tasman bringing some pretty rough seas.
That is likely to abate during the week before rising to 2 to 2.5 metres by Friday.
