It doesn’t leave much time for school work, but the year eight student is okay with that.
The Tacking Point teenager will lead the charge in her club’s quest for Interbranch surf life saving success at Black Head on December 8.
Sport runs through the 14-year-old’s veins and she’s pretty handy at most of them having taken her place at representative netball, nippers and cross country level.
She also ran around for the Port Macquarie Sharks in this year’s junior league tag competition.
If that doesn’t keep this sports-mad teenager busy enough, she also umpires matches for Hastings Valley Netball Association.
Next weekend, the board paddler will line up in her third surf life saving Interbranch carnival.
Only in her third year competing at that level, Hewens already has a number of fans and it’s not hard to see why.
Coach Mel Cockshutt believes she is the best board paddler at the club.
The quietly-spoken 14-year-old first competed in the under-12 division three years ago.
“I’ve gone alright before – about middle of the range,” Hewens said of her previous Interbranch results.
“It’s against all the top clubs from Sydney so it’s pretty crazy but I’m hoping to do well this year.”
She started her sporting smorgasbord of activities with under-7 netball.
From there, it all snowballed.
Hewens, however, said playing a wide range of different sports had benefited her in different ways.
“It’s helped my fitness for sure; all the cardio fitness from all the other sports helps,” she said.
Recently, Hewens was also named in the Hastings Valley Netball Association’s junior representative team for the 2019 season.
But 2019 may be the year where things change.
She knows some of her sporting calendar may have be freed up as her education takes preference.
“There isn’t much spare time,” she said.
“But it’s good; I handle it pretty well because I just finished most of my exams which is good.”
It’s no surprise the secret to it all is simply hard work.
“I’ve done so much training and all the experience over the years has helped,” Hewens said.
