The local awards form part of a state wide initiative to recognise the hard work students, their teachers and community members play in obtaining greater educational outcomes for Aboriginal students.
Linda Olive, Aboriginal community liaison officer for the Hastings and Macleay area said the awards were about showing Aboriginal students the work and effort they put into study is worth it.
“The awards are given out to students who are making the most of the educational opportunities given to them,” Ms Olive said.
“As well as student awards, we will be giving out a number of awards that will recognise outstanding teachers and staff members who are going above and beyond to help in the pursuit of Aboriginal outcomes for our students.
“It is about celebrating the students and all they are achieving.”
Students – of all ages – and staff members span the length of the Hastings region with winners coming from Wauchope, Port Macquarie and the Camden Haven.
“The awards really are Hastings wide with a number of winners coming from Wauchope and the Camden Haven as well as Port Macquarie,” she said.
“The winners of our awards are then chosen to be nominated for the state awards and in the past we have been very successful at a state level so we will see what happens this year.
“The awards are a significant thing for students because it shows them that whatever is happening at home or in other aspects of their life their education is important and their achievements should be recognised.”
The student categories highlight student leadership, success in literacy and numeracy, the arts and sport.
The teacher categories highlight Aboriginal and non Aboriginal teachers and staff who have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the outcomes of Aboriginal students.
The awards will be tomorrow, on November 14 from 10am.
