It started as a joke and ended with a 70-metre sprint that handed Port City Breakers league tag star Nakita Binge the label of fastest woman at the Tag World Cup.

Binge originally had no intention of competing and was simply strolling over with her friends to take their place in the crowd on the main field at Coffs Harbour.
Then she was encouraged to “give it a go”, took off her pluggers and the rest is history.
“I raced in bare feet because our tent was nowhere near where they had the race and was on one of the other fields,” Binge said.
“My teammates told me they thought I’d go really good in it, but at the time I only had thongs on and they said just take them off and go with no shoes.
When Binge took her place on the starting line, it all became very real very quickly.
“I kept doubting myself and when I got to the starting point I started shaking because I was so nervous; there were heaps of people around the stadium watching it,” she said.
The Port City Breakers star should never have doubted herself – although she started slow, she did it easily.

“I saw the tryline and didn’t really click into gear because I was slow off the mark, then I looked and went straight past it,” she said.
Any chance of keeping her success quiet and away from the coach was blown out of the water when her name was called across the loudspeakers.
Binge’s main concern was how her coach would react, but she didn’t need to worry.
“It was really hot so everyone didn’t go in it; I didn’t even want to because I had injuries and if I pulled a muscle the coach was going to be angry,” she said.
“When I finished the race my name got called over the speaker, but I got back and the coach was like ‘congratulations’ so I got away with that one.”
Binge had to tough it out in the match straight after the sprint as she had injured her quad.
“I played in the next game but my quad was really sore and I was thinking about how I needed to have a massage,” she said.
It wasn’t all about the sprint success with Binge providing a number of tries for the Indigenous side.
Over the whole comp I scored about eight tries.

“Over the whole comp I scored about eight tries,” she said.
The first three came in her World Cup debut match.
“In the first game I was really nervous because I had never played at the World Cup before,” she said.
“I didn’t know what to look forward to, but then I ended up scoring the first try in the game and then another two tries after that.”
Binge’s Indigenous women’s team made the quarter-finals before they were defeated by Lebanon in a drop-off.
After having a taste of the World Cup, she has already set her sights on the next one.
“I’ll be back for more; I definitely want to get in the team again,” Binge said.
