Held reach year, people from around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate worldwide hunger from our lifetime and is one of the most celebrated days on the United Nations calendar.
The focus of the day is that food is a basic and fundamental human right. Yet, in a world of billions, 805 million people worldwide live with chronic hunger.
Around 60 percent of women and almost five million children under the age of five die of malnutrition-related causes every day.
Fadi Barsoum franchise partner for the socially conscious food eatery, Zambrero in Port Macquarie said people locally can also take part in the day of action.
“For us we are passionate about making a difference in our local communities and around the world,” Mr Barsoum said.
“Food is what we do but why? Well we want to do our part to end world hunger.
"Back when we started we were founded on the principle that a good feed can mean a good deed, and we donate one meal to local and international charities for every burrito, bowl or Grab & Go product purchased each year.
“Meals are donated locally via Foodbank and internationally with Rise Against Hunger. To date, the company has donated more than 25.7 million meals.”
Today on World Food Day, Zambrero and volunteers around Australia will pack over 400,000 meals to donate to the Philippines.
“The packed meals will be delivered to school feeding programs to promote class attendance, alleviate short-term hunger and give kids the energy they need to learn and break the cycle of poverty,” he said.
“Most people in Port Macquarie won’t be able to attend our packing events in capital cities around the country but locally there is still so much people can do.
“Today on World Food Day for every burrito or bowl sold in our store we will be donating two meals to help the hungry around the world.
“Our ethos is all about fighting world hunger all year round and then today we are partnering with other organisations to help on a much bigger scale.
“Our goal is to donate one billion meals by 2025 and in each store we have a counter connected to every shop in the world. At the moment we have donated nearly 26 million meals but every one counts towards our goal.”
