Monday next is a statutory public holiday, Labor Day, and shops will close as usual. A public holiday has also been gazetted for Tuesday, October 8, from noon onwards, the occasion of the Governor General’s visit.
A large crowd is expected to greet the Governor General on his arrival at the waterfront green, near the Royal Hotel, during Tuesday morning, and again in the afternoon when he opens the Church of England tower. A public holiday, from noon onwards, has also been gazetted for Thursday, October 10.
Chairman of the Race and Recreation Trust, Mr Athol Platt, is looking forward to a very large attendance at the race course that afternoon, when the Governor will officially open the new track.
Have you a Beard?
Have you a beard and a 29” to 32” waist? Sesqui-centenary pageant producer Terry Gould is looking for bearded gents with reasonably fine waistlines. He doesn’t want you to act, all you have to do is wear the costume which he will provide. Terry Gould has a collection of costumes and wants bodies in them. These are the only stipulations – you wear your costume to the Colonial Ball in Wauchope, on Thursday night next week, and you wear it in the historical procession in William Street on Tuesday afternoon, after the Governor General, Lord Casey, has officially opened the restored church tower.
Horton Street Shopping Mall
The Chamber of Commerce will investigate a proposal to establish a shopping mall in Horton Street with major traffic restricted or banned completely.
The mall would have wide walkways, with a central strip of trees, flower gardens and kiosks. A committee to plan the scheme was formed at the chamber’s dinner meeting, held at the Royal Hotel on Thursday night.
It will consider a proposal to approach every shop and property owner in Horton Street to contribute $1000 each. Kooloonbung developer, Mr Peter Vaggelas, has offered $1000 if 75 other people will put in the same amount.
The chamber decided to take steps to improve Horton Street after seeing a series of slides entitled ”New Look on Main Street”. The meeting was told that three tons of bark will be available this week to decorate shop fronts for the sesqui-centenary celebrations next week.
The bark will be provided by Heron’s Creek Timber Mills, which will also supply 40 trees for decorating the street. Mr Peter Vaggelas offered the use of the gravelled area on the corner of William and Short Streets for off-street parking. He said the area would be available until he started to build there.
Deadline for Sheets
Thursday of this week is the deadline date at the laundry for those single-bed sheets. The Colonial Ball committee has been appealing to the womenfolk for two single bed sheets, take them to the laundry, where they will be starched and ironed, ready for use on the supper table at the Colonial Ball in Wauchope on Thursday, October 10.
So far the committee has nothing like enough sheets, and this last appeal is made. Remember to be sure to put your name on the sheets before you take them to the laundry.
