The six members of the group come together when in the centre each Tuesday and Thursday to engage in a variety of woodworking projects.
With their new garden shed set up the group recently went to the local Mitre 10 to get supplies for their new ventures and were thrilled when retail manager, Chris Wright provided the group a saw, drills, timber and basic woodworking equipment all for free.
Omnicare’s Julie Dunn, general manager aged and disability services, was overwhelmed with the support and generosity of the store.
“We go to Mitre 10 because they offer our clients a safe and friendly place to browse and shop for their men’s shed materials. The staff are always happy to assist the gentlemen, who are living with dementia, and can sometimes need some extra support,” she said.
“I couldn’t believe it when the team returned to say that the Mitre 10 team had supported our group in such an amazing way. This will really give the gents the opportunity to kick start a number of projects that they are keen to get started on.”
For Petrie Mitre 10 retail manager Chris Wright, he was happy to support the gents in their work.
“As a company we are very happy to support local charities and this is a great project for the gents involved,” Mr Wright said.
The group will begin working on a number of projects including a raised planter box for a vegetable and herb garden, a new chicken coop home for our chickens, a divider wall for our sensory garden, a holder for playing cards and other various small woodworking activities.
As the group grows and more projects are planned further tools, equipment and items for the garden will be purchased.
All of Omnicare Alliance’s day centres use the Montessori for Dementia approach which centres on supporting each client as an individual, with a strong emphasis on their abilities, interests and needs.
