The Pride were emphatic in their 26-0 disposal of NRL Victoria at St John Oval that capped off a tremendous tournament for the Chris Hollis-coached squad.
“They were pretty much impeccable,” Hollis said.
“They didn’t let up and their line speed in defence was phenomenal.”
Hollis admitted Group 3 had “no idea what NRL Victoria were like”, but in the end it didn’t matter.
“The Newcastle game was the big one and from there the boys kept kicking on,” he said.
Despite a tough first half, Group 3 took a 14-0 lead into the break before they went on with the job in the second half.
Breakers second-rower Austin Bradley was judged player of the final, while Port City teammates Ty-Jesse Brabant and Kaleb Cooper were also strong.
Prop Ryan Maloney and centre Goldberg also played their roles with Hollis labelling Goldberg’s try as “one of the tries of the tournament.”
“All the Port boys went well,” he said.
“We had a set play where we normally went out the back to the fullback, but Mhalikai Mercy hit Josh with a beautiful ball and he raced 60 metres.
“He burned them.”
Group Three finished with a combined score of 112-12 from their four matches after previous victories over Group 19 (30-8), Newcastle (24-4) and Central Coast (32-0).
Hooker Charlie Dignam from Taree Panthers led the way for Group Three in the final, scoring two tries in what was a strong all round performance from the squad.
