The project is aimed at raising awareness of food waste in the home, and educating local families in food waste reduction techniques.
The project is running across the six council areas in the Mid North Coast and is part of the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Love Food Hate Waste state-wide Food Smart program.
The average NSW household throws away $3,800 of edible food each year.
More than 60 Tacking Point Public School families are now actively participating in the program.
“The Food Smart Families program has been welcomed by Tacking Point Public school. It has given families the opportunity to do something practical in their own homes and is complementary to the school’s term three theme “Sustainability”. Food Smart has given families including my own the tools and ideas to reduce their food waste, save money and help the environment,” school principal Phil Harris said.
“Food Smart has been embraced and has been promoted through the schools Environmental Team, P & C and social media. Families are looking forward to participating in a bees wax wrap workshop where they can make their own plastic free wraps, helping them to keep their leftovers fresh.”
All participating households received a free tool kit with items such as bag clips and food huggers to help them keep their food fresh for longer.
Families measure the food waste at the start and end of the program to monitor the progress of their food waste reduction.
