Alan Petts, who is a parishioner, put the statue back together and restored it to the grotto in front of the church of Our Lady of Lourdes.
Parish priest, Father Felix Ekeh, who prayed for the people who did the damage, along with Mass-goers, is very grateful that the statue has been restored.
“Alan took the broken pieces and fixed the statue. He has done a marvellous job,” said Father Felix.
“By the time it was mounted on Friday, back on the platform, he finished off the remaining job to make it stronger. It was blessed this morning, (Wednesday), which is fitting because today, the Catholic church celebrates the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
“I just hope a thing like this doesn’t happen again,” he said.
Wauchope Gazette readers were disgusted by the vandalism and wrote on our Facebook page.
“Why do people do that? Very sad,” commented Fran Caraghin.
“Not good. They need to be caught and punished,” wrote Joy Black.
“What’s the point? Maybe to get publicity? People bored – a word I hate with a passion. Find a meaning to life and help those in need. Be constructive. You will feel so good,” advised Lyn McNeil.
“This is such uneducated low and sad behaviour. So much without respect. Parents need to educate their children not to touch other people’s belongings,” commented Lizzy Nejkov.
“Yet another destruction of things in Wauchope. Clearly, something needs doing to stop this happening,” wrote Mat Oliver.
