Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and often debilitating disease which attacks the central nervous system – the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.
It is the most common neurological disease in young adults and attacks people at the time of their lives when they are planning families and building a career.
Sally Moriarty, Ellieen Gainsford, Martin Brown and Greg Trotter are part of a larger Westpac team who are aiming to raise more than $100,000 for the cause.
“We are all bike riders and myself and Ellieen have done the ride before but for the boys it will be their first time,” Ms Moriarty said.
“I think we are all looking for a challenge and in the coming months our fitness preparation and fund raising efforts will ramp up.”
“I have a friend who has MS and I know most of us know someone with the condition so I think it is an active way to say we support you and the fundraising will hopefully lead to some breakthroughs,” Ms Gainsford said.
The ride has been going for 37 years and while it sports a great view, is considered a fairly intense course.
“It is not an easy ride because there are lots of hills but the view is very picturesque and I am very much looking forward to the challenge of the course,” Mr Brown said.
“The ride is for a great cause and being four of 10,000 people will hopefully get us across the line.”
“At this stage I think we are all nervously excited about the upcoming ride and keen to get into our preparation and fundraising,” Mr Trotter said.
