Led by Port Macquarie RSL sub_Branch president Greg Laird, those in attendance remembered and gave thanks to those who made the supreme sacrifice for Australia in time of war.
Victory in the Pacific Day, also referred to as Victory over Japan Day, commemorates Japan’s acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender on August 14, 1945.
For Australians, it meant that the Second World War was finally over.
A superb commemorative address was delivered by Port Macquarie Public School captain Aleyna Portakaldali, followed by a wreath laying and the last post.
The Ode of Remembrance was given by Mr Laird, the prayer for the nation and service members by Chaplain Carl Moses before the national anthem concluded the ceremony.
Mr Laird said despite the decline in numbers, it was a wonderful service.
“Numbers are dwindling because World War II people are falling off. There are a few heads I know that would have normally been here but they’re all over 90 and it’s very hard for them,” he explained.
“But it is still great to see the effort people made. Aleyna in particular was absolutely magnificent.
“She was animated, her voice came across so well and it makes you very proud. It goes to show Australia is in good hands.”
