The performance of St John Paul College goalkeeper Lex Weiley was the difference as the Coffs Harbour school progressed to the round of 16 on Wednesday.
MacKillop coach Dom Ashe said Weiley came up with several point-blank saves to deny his team as they fell to a 3-1 defeat.
“He came up with a number of saves that normally you would pulling out of the back of the net,” Ashe said.
“We had our chances and just didn’t convert our opportunities.”
Ashe refused to blame a controversial decision to disallow a MacKillop goal late in the first half that would have given them a 2-1 lead at the break.
“Their linesman was okay with it, but the referee who was 20 metres away overruled him,” Ashe said.
“It would have been nice to have that second goal prior to half-time not be disallowed.
“I told the ref it was a big call, but one decision is not going to change the final result.”
Luke Townsend equalised for MacKillop midway through the first half and despite having over 50 per cent of the ball in the opposition half, they couldn’t capitalise.
“Their finish and execution was better than ours on the day,” Ashe said.
