That's the challenge facing about 30 MacKillop College students and it's all in the name of fundraising for The Kids’ Cancer Project.
College enrichment coordinator Mandy Palin and English teacher Nikki Gray were the driving forces behind the project.
Ms Palin said the students were challenged to write, illustrate, edit and then publish by 8pm (July 25) their book. As part of the competition, a bound copy is required within 24 hours.
"Each book is given a set of specific parameters, which they only received prior to starting this morning," she said.
"Their book must include, a human character, a non human character, a setting and a complication or an issue while five key words are also required as part of the book.
"Our students are from years 7 to 9, and all entries will be judged on various criteria.
"Eventually all the books will end up in hospitals; the books are also being pitched to children aged between 10 years and 16 years."
Ms Gray said each of the groups featured students with varying skills set.
"While this exercise is targeting creative writing students, it also requires illustrators and editors which means each group contains a very diverse range of students," she said.
"Each student is working really well in their group and they are also sharing their skills."
The write a book in a day project also means students are encouraged to get involved in team work, problem solving, leadership, collaboration along with their writing skills.
Ms Palin said she was 'very impressed' with the effort of the students.
"This is a first for the college but we would love to build on this event next year," she added.
