The West End Store in Wauchope has opened its doors again, after undergoing a revamp and is now a cafe, takeaway and general store.
It’s the work of Nathan McKinnon and Mathew Fletcher, who are serving coffee and food in a cosy, 13-seat dining area. They sell takeaway food including burgers, sandwiches, lamb pitta, hot dogs and fish and chips, plus pantry items, fresh produce, dairy, bread, meat and ice-cream.
“We offer traditional takeaway options, as well as fresh, new, modern and international tastes,” said Nathan.
They bought the place – which first opened in 1945 – two years ago, and got the go-ahead from the council to carry out their plans.
“We had to get proof that it’s always been the West End Store, a local general store. We have made it much bigger so we can service more people. All the timber is recycled. It is red mahogany and blackbutt,” said Nathan.
Mathew honed his skills as a chef in Melbourne and the Mornington peninsula and is loving his tree change to Wauchope.
The cafe is just up the hill from Wauchope Showground as you head towards Timbertown.
