The project will provide 46 nose-in car parking spaces on the northern side of Garden Crescent.
The car parking will be located within the council’s road reserve.
A report to the June council meeting said the council received an application to undertake works as a material public benefit from the developers of the Garden Village seniors housing development.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council approved the application on the basis the work would provide material public benefit.
Garden Village chief executive officer Craig Wearne said the car parking project would have a positive impact on surrounding streets, particularly Findlay Avenue.
Sports fields and Hastings Secondary College Westport Campus are nearby.
Mr Wearne said the car parking would also improve the treescape of Hennessy Park as the project would delineate between the road and the green space.
“It provides more parking and a better treescape, but importantly, it provides us and the community with a safer environment to park,” he said.
The planned parking approach will replace the current ad hoc parking and boost the car parking by at least one third.
Mr Wearne said they anticipated the work would start in November.
Garden Village and the council will contribute to the costs of the parking improvements.
Council director Alex Fisher said the council welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with the private sector to achieve cost-effective outcomes that benefited our whole community.
She said the cost sharing arrangement with Garden Village to install around 46 car parks on Garden Crescent would not only benefit local residents in the area but also improve access to nearby sports fields on Findlay Avenue and Aston Street when soccer is being played on weekends.
Garden Village and the council are finalising the agreement to construct the parking.
Meanwhile, Garden Village’s vertical-style seniors living development is due for completion later this year.
The Cascades project will deliver 52 apartments across two buildings, each with five floors of accommodation and a basement car park with a total of 58 car spaces.
