From May 27 – June 3, communities around Australia will hold Reconciliation Week gatherings, and this year the Birpai Aboriginal Land Council is inviting the community to celebrations on May 29 and May 31.
The aim of Reconciliation Week is for everyone to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, to share that knowledge and help us grow as a united nation.
Birpai Local Aboriginal Land Council CEO, David Carroll said the week is important but should have longer lasting results.
“I think there is a certain aspect of only talking about things on nationally recognised days, but at the Land Council we think reconciliation is something that the whole community should focus on all year, not just during Reconciliation Week,” Mr Carroll said.
“Reconciliation Week is a great opportunity to pause and see the work we have done, and is a chance to look to the future because there is a long way to go.
“But we are passionate about making sure we talk about reconciliation all year round.”
Mr Carroll said the Land Council will be facilitating Reconciliation Week events throughout the week.
“The Land Council is a meeting place and we are really excited to be able to host two events during Reconciliation Week,” he said.
“The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is arranging the morning tea on Tuesday, May 29, and then we will be having a lunch on Thursday, May 31 organised by the Mid North Coast Legal Centre.
“We are a meeting place for people to come and so we are really glad that the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and the Mid North Coast Legal Centre are jumping on board and hosting events with us.”
He said the Land Council is an active organisation that is connecting with the whole Aboriginal community.
“The Land Council is quite active in the community hosting a number of groups aimed at all different ages; from dance to weaving to agricultural groups we try to cater to the entire Aboriginal community and welcome collaborations.”
The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council morning tea is on Tuesday, May 29, at 10am and the Mid North Coast Legal Centre lunch is on Thursday, May 31 from 12pm.
