On Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the 50th Anniversary of the naming of Mr’s York’s Garden, and joined in the celebration of this beautiful public space.

With the construction of new steps, and the recent addition of Mrs York’s Walk, the Friends of Mr’s York’s Garden have once again demonstrated what it means to be proud of where we live.

If you’re yet to visit the garden, I can tell you it is a definite must do activity.

Amidst the backdrop of the Hastings River meeting the sea, Mrs York’s Garden is the perfect place for a picnic with the family or a catch up coffee with friends.

I love meeting local residents who display incredible passion and pride in our region, and who dedicate so much of their time to provide great benefit for our local community.

A huge accolade and thanks must go to the volunteers who have continued with Bertha York’s vision for the garden all those years ago.

So why not head down to the corner of Stewart and Grant Streets, take a stroll and enjoy the beautifully transformed Mrs York’s Garden.

Mother’s Day Classic

On Sunday I joined hundreds of passionate locals who participated in the Mother’s Day Classic from Westport Park, a 5km walk to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.

The classic is the largest community fundraising event for breast cancer research in Australia.

It’s been going in Port Macquarie for four years, and since its inception in 1998, has raised $33.2 million dollars to support the cause.

Around 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year compared to 1 in 700 men, which is a truly shocking figure.

Thank you to the local organisers for making this event happen, and to everyone who celebrated Mother’s Day and joined the fight against this terrible disease.
