The large diameter stormwater pipeline is between Kooloonbung Creek, Hollingworth and Waugh streets.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council transport and stormwater network group manager Duncan Clarke said the pipeline was approximately 2.5 metres in depth and a large proportion of the pipeline sat below the sea water level.
“The pipeline is heavily encrusted with oysters and has a history of failures, resulting in subsidence of the ground above and sinkholes in Hollingworth and Waugh streets,” he said.
“The project will result in a structural liner being installed within the pipeline, which will restore the pipeline’s structural integrity, providing an additional 50-year life for the pipe, and most importantly, preventing further subsidence of the ground and roadway above.”
Following the relining project, a duckbilled flood flap will be installed to assist with flood management.
Mr Clarke said maintaining our stormwater network was a critical function that council delivered on behalf of our community.
