A Cameo of Life and Laughter: A Black & White View of Poetry & Prose, is the work of Jollie T Ollie, also known as Les Oliver.
Les was born in Sydney in 1950, and worked in the insurance industry for many years, becoming a private investigator.
“I investigated most types of insurance claims and also assessed many types of property damage claims,” said Les, who had his own business, along with best mate, Don, for 17 years.
Frustrated by the insurance industry, he turned to other avenues of work, including security guard, club supervisor, carer for teenagers who had been released from juvenile justice, and testing sprinkler systems in high-rise buildings in Sydney. He then went back into the insurance industry.
I gained inspiration from dealing with fair dinkum country people, which helped me to place my thoughts on life into perspective.

“I gained inspiration from dealing with fair dinkum country people, which helped me to place my thoughts on life into perspective,” he said.
Les and his wife moved to Wauchope from Dubbo four years ago.
“Since then, I have made some new friends, but I often reflect on days gone by in Sydney and Dubbo. Some of the items in this book are a small reflection of those times. I now have inspiration to proceed with another book, but in the meantime, I hope this cameo provides some insight as to my thoughts, feelings and sense of humour,” he said.
Les said the writing wasn’t a problem, but compiling the book was. He thanked M & S Printing of Wauchope who printed the book and gave advice, his son-in-law, Charlie, for computer assistance, his wife, Robyn, whose love and support made him persevere, and the staff of Wauchope Library, who allowed him the privilege of a book launch.
