He intends to publish the names of all the people who had an association with the Hastings area who served in the Great War.
He’s doing this as his bit towards the anniversary, and has defined the association as:
1. A person who was born in the Hastings and enlisted locally
2. A person who was born in the Hastings and enlisted at a distant centre
3. A person who born elsewhere, was residing or working in the Hastings at enlistment time
“I am combining research by Hastings Historical Society and my research on Google of available war records to produce a record for each person,” said Greg.
The record will include name, rank, number, unit, enlistment date, time overseas, if died or returned to Australia and another 16 headings with other bits of information.
“I know that there will be people I miss so a public display may fill some of the gaps. I hope to display the list on Anzac Day, maybe at the Cenotaph and later at the RSL for public comment, additions and amendments, a display during 2018 at the Wauchope library and again at the Remembrance Day parade on November 11,” he said.
Greg is inviting the public to contact him with details of known World War One soldiers. He needs the full name and regimental number of each soldier, so he can research the extra information required.
If you can help, Greg’s first preference is that you please email him at cavanaghclan01@bigpond.com or ring him on 6585 1393.
He has listed 300 people so far, and has another 100 names yet to be processed. Still a lot of hours reading to go, he says.
