It would appear, however, that it is the NO campaigners who are the perpetrators of most of the bad behaviour in our region.
A friend of mine had foul abuse yelled at him from a passing car while he was photographing the Timbertown log. Another friend had his lawn ‘graffitied’ with a NO in herbicide.
The Elders’ second reason to vote NO could well be misguided too. The short reference in Matthew 19 does make mention of marriage being between man and woman but it also forbids divorce.
Do the Good Elders wish to return us to the bad old days of forcing people to live in abusive marriages or can they accept that we are, as a society, no longer strictly bound by Biblical rules?
It would be convenient if we could have a definitive account of what the alleged Son of the Universal Creator actually said so that his sayings might guide us to World peace, justice, equality and sustainable use of this wonderful planet.
All that the YES campaigners are asking is for is equal rights in the Australian Law so that people who are not heterosexual can marry, and that their chosen union can have the benefits and protections contained in the Marriage Act. Surely, we can find enough good will in our hearts to grant them equal recognition of their love.
