THIRTEEN local pubs, clubs and breweries have jumped on board the Cancer Council NSW’s Stars of The Hastings Dance for Cancer event by holding a Karma Keg fundraiser on Friday, October 20 from 5pm.
“It’s been fantastic that as an industry, we can take the competitive gloves off and unite in support of wonderful local fundraising initiatives and needs, like the Cancer Council,” said Alistair Flower from the Settlers Inn, who is one of the nine ‘Stars’ taking to the dancefloor on November 24 at Rydges, Port Macquarie.
“The Karma Keg is all about giving. It’s a very simple promotion, we have a nominated beer as the karma keg, you pay whatever you like for your schooner with all money raised from the karma keg donated to the Cancer Council,” Alistair continued.
As well as the Karma Keg, and with support from local community groups, each venue will be holding meat and seafood raffles, with some pubs also running charity barbecues.
Katy-Lee Waldron from Port City Bowling Club believes there’s always something more to be done in the fight against cancer.
“Our venue is always looking for ways to help locals, and what better way than to fundraise for the Cancer Council, who work in our community to support people with a cancer diagnosis,” said Katy-Lee.
“It’s a fun and easy way for the public to give to charity, whilst also enjoying a couple of drinks on a Friday afternoon with work colleagues or friends.”
Now in its fifth year, the Dance for Cancer event has raised more than $220,000 to help support programs including the Transport to Treatment program, financial and legal assistance, SunSmart and Sun Sound programs as well as funding vital cancer research.
Venues that have jumped on board for the fundraiser include the Panthers Port Macquarie, Lake Cathie Tavern, Laurieton Hotel, Fernhill Tavern, Port Macquarie Golf Club, Settlers Inn, The Duck on Clarence, Port City Bowling Club, West Kempsey Hotel, Moore Beer Brewery, Finnian’s Irish Tavern, The Lounge Room and the Nambucca Hotel.
Stars of the Hastings Dance for Cancer will be held on November 24 at Rydges, Port Macquarie.
On the night three awards will be presented – highest fundraiser, judge’s choice and the people’s choice award.
Three judges have been named – last year’s winner Gavin Rippon, Vickii Byram from the Port Macquarie News and special celebrity judge, world champion dancer and adjudicator, Helen Richey.
